Hello, I'm JO
Newborn Photography in the UK: What Parents Need to Know | Jo Page Photography
When
is the best time for newborn photography?
The ideal time for a newborn photoshoot is between 5–14 days after birth. During this period, babies are usually sleepier, more flexible, and naturally curl into womb-like positions that work beautifully for posed newborn photography.
However, I’ve had great success with older babies so don’t worry your Newborn photography sessions can still take place beyond this window, just with a little extra time on posing and soothin and a more natural style focusing on connection, expressions, and family bonding.
At Jo Page Photography, every session is fully baby-led, ensuring comfort and flexibility at all times.
The Process
Newborn photography safety: what parents need to know
One of the most important concerns for parents is newborn photography safety.
Your baby will never be placed in an unsafe position or left unsupported at any point during the session. All posing is gentle, natural, and guided by your baby’s comfort.
For more creative images, I also offer newborn composite photography, a professional editing technique where multiple images are combined. This allows for artistic, “floating” or styled poses while ensuring your baby is always physically supported by a parent or safely posed at all times.
Safety is always the top priority in every newborn session.
What is newborn composite photography?
Newborn composite photography is a specialist editing technique used to create artistic and highly styled newborn images safely.
For example, images where a baby appears to be:
- resting in a tiny prop basket
- floating on a blanket
- supported in a complex pose
are created by combining multiple photographs into one final image. At no point is the baby left unsupported.
At Jo Page Photography, composite photography allows for creative storytelling while maintaining complete newborn safety standards. It’s ideal for parents looking for something unique and artistic.

Common questions about newborn photography
What if my baby cries during the session?
This is completely normal. Newborn sessions are designed around feeding, soothing, and breaks. There is no rush, and everything is adjusted to your baby’s needs.
What if I don’t feel ready for photos?
Many parents feel this way, but newborn photography focuses on your baby and your connection — not perfection. Simple, natural portraits are often the most meaningful.
What if I miss the newborn stage?
Even if your baby is older than two weeks, you can still have beautiful baby photography sessions capturing their personality and your bond.
Why newborn photography is so important
Newborns change incredibly quickly. Those tiny fingers, curled toes, and sleepy expressions are gone before you realise it.
Professional newborn photography in the UK helps preserve:
- Your baby’s earliest features
- The emotion of those first days
- The connection between you and your baby
- Memories you’ll never get back
These images become part of your family’s story for life.
